Li’s work has explored a new genre emerging amongst young Chinese artists of The Dragon Year. We call it “Eastern Magical Realism.” Similar to the magical realism of Latin America, one finds both the real world and the imagined world interacting together on the canvas.
In Li’s images, younger people are depicted with dream-like images that emerge from their inner wonderings and surround the space around them. Common images for young boys are boats, water and rocks.
In this manner, Li draws his work solidly from the history of Chinese traditional painting. Conveying powerful emotion, the images combine to create a whole – in the instance of Li’s paintings, the whole is a poetic representation of the young person depicted, as they are in the real world and as they imagine in their inner world.
